Saudi, GCC, Yemen representatives to United Nations call on international community to put pressure on coup militias in Yemen
Published in Saudi Press Agency on 21 - 05 - 2015

Representatives of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Yemen to the United Nations called on the international community to exert pressure on the Houthi militias and their allies for the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2216.
The remarks of the representatives came after a closed door session during which members of the UN Security Council listened to statements by the UN special representative to Yemen Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmed and Director of Operations of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs John Ging.
Yemeni representative to the United Nations Khaled Yamani said that the Yemeni government supports UN Secretary General in bringing Yemeni parties to reach a solution through negotiation of all aspects of the crisis.
He expressed his government's welcome of the efforts by the United Nations envoy Ismail Ould Sheikh, who began today efforts to communicate with the parties, as well as the call of the Secretary General today for a conference in Geneva bringing together parties to the crisis.
He said, "We believe that the Secretary General should exert more pressure on the coup forces of the Houthis and supporters of the former president who continue killing the Yemeni people in various cities in Yemen. The killings in the cities do not give room and don not send positive messages that the coup forces and the Houthis are ready to sit at the negotiating table, but to continue in their transgression and implementation of Iran's expansionist project in Yemen, which is rejected by the Yemeni people.
For his part, Saudi ambassador to the United Nations Mr. Abdullah Al-Maalami confirmed that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia welcomes the call of UN Secretary-General for convening the Geneva conference among the Yemeni parties.
He said, "We're pleased with the development that has been made in the Riyadh conference held recently and which will be the basis for any future talks in Geneva". He also expressed his delight at the efforts by the new UN Secretary General Envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmed in Riyadh.
Al-Maalami expressed his belief that a major development was achieved in the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the Yemeni people, but he pointed out that this development was hampered by the continued attacks of the Houthi militias and their allies in several areas of Yemen. He said that we would have liked more time for the delivery of humanitarian aid (which was not possible) because of the continued aggression and abuse of the Houthis and their allies in Aden and other Yemeni cities and their continued targeting of the Saudi cities of Najran and Jizan with 74 attacks which led to injuries among Saudi civilians, and their continued moving of the missile systems and weapon parts to areas close to the Saudi border which are all a blatant and clear violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2216, which they have not accepted yet."
He added, "while political consultations continue, the international community must pressure the rebels and their allies to implement the Security Council resolution, and we hope that the conference to be held in Geneva will build on what was established in Riyadh meeting to reach a comprehensive political solution in Yemen", pointing out that such solutions are difficult to reach at the time that the Houthis continue to occupy the capital and other regions.
