The Minister of Agriculture Engineer Abdul Rahman bin Abdul Mohsen Al-Fadhli patronized here today the workshop of "combating red palm weevil", in the framework of technical cooperation program between the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to benefit from the experiences of the participating countries and techniques associated with the discovery and combating the red palm weevil. The national coordinator of the program for Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Dr. Khalid bin Mohammed Al-Fuhaid delivered a speech in which he welcomed the attendees, noting that the red palm weevil was discovered in the Kingdom before 30 years and it spread to most of the palm-growing areas in the Kingdom as a result of the wrong practices, the most important one of them is transferring the palms unauthorized to circulate legally. Then, Director of the program of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to the Kingdom and the head of mission, Dr Abu Bakr Abdul Aziz Mohammed delivered a speech in which he welcomed the attendees, noting that organization began the fight against the red palm weevil since the beginning of the nineties through bringing an expert from Costa Rica to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and it also carried out a regional project to combat the red palm weevil in North Africa, where the organization is currently working within the current technical cooperation program on building the Kingdom's national capabilities in the field of integrated pest management through the development of policies and institutional frameworks, technology transfer and dissemination of good agricultural practices to ensure the production.
