At least 10 people were killed and dozens others remained missing after a river ferry with some 150 aboard capsized in western Bangladesh, officials said Sunday. Divers retrieved nine bodies trapped inside the sunken ferry while a baby died on the way to hospital after local residents rescued 50 passengers from the river, police officer Rakib-Uz-Zaman said. The ferry sank after it collided with a cargo vessel in the Padma River, Manikganj district chief administrator Rashida Ferdaus told dpa by phone. It is feared the death toll could rise. Rescuers believe more people are still trapped inside the vessel, Ferdaus said, adding that two children and two women were among the dead. She said the ferry was packed with an estimated 150 passengers when it capsized about 90 kilometres west of capital Dhaka.
