A veteran Indian diplomat and United Nations official has been named as the new U.N. under-secretary-general for field support, AP reported. A statement Wednesday by the spokesman for Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Atul Khare will succeed Ameerah Haq of Bangladesh. The role involves leading all logistical, financial and other support for U.N. peacekeeping operations, which have a record 130,000 people deployed around the world. Khare has been a former assistant secretary-general for U.N. peacekeeping operations, among other posts. He also served with India's diplomatic missions in France, Thailand, Britain, Senegal, Mauritius and the United Nations. -- SPA 21:42 LOCAL TIME 18:42 GMT تغريد
