The top U.N. humanitarian official, Valerie Amos, who oversaw international relief efforts in Syria and other troubled areas, is resigning, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday. Amos, the U.N. undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, had been in the key position for more than four years, overseeing major aid efforts in Syria, South Sudan, Iraq, and the Central African Republic. The departure of Amos comes as the United Nations struggles to address a record-high 50 million people displaced by conflict. In a statement, Ban praised Amos for the extensive experience she brought to the position and said she "has helped find solutions for people who are facing the worst experiences of their lives."
