U.S. Bank Profits Rise 7 Percent

September quarter, up from $36.1 billion in the same period a year earlier. The percentage of unprofitable banks fell to 6.4 percent, compared to 8.7 percent a year ago.
The FDIC said the number of "problem banks" fell to 329 in the third quarter, the lowest number since the first quarter of 2009. Only two FDIC-insured banks failed last quarter.
