Beijing and Canberra agreed Monday on the terms of a long-awaited trade deal designed to boost the mining and agricultural sectors in Australia and open the way for Chinese investors, dpa reported. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Chinese President Xi Jinping witnessed the signing in Canberra of a declaration of intent to conclude the legalities of the deal in 2015. "It's a good day for Australia, a good day for China, a good day for consumers and ultimately a good day for workers," Abbott told a joint press conference. The agreement between Australia and its biggest trade partner has been a decade in the making and is estimated to be worth around 18 billion Australian dollars (16 billion US dollars) over the next decade.
