AlHijjah 29, 1435, October 23, 2014, SPA -- A Canadian soldier standing guard at the National War Memorial in the capital of Ottawa was shot and killed Wednesday, and a gunman was killed when heavy fire erupted inside Parliament, authorities said. Police said that they were still hunting for as many as two other gunmen. "Today is a sad and tragic day for our city and our country," Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said. He said it was a tragedy with "origins as yet not fully known, causes not yet fully understood." Ottawa police spokesman Chuck Benoit said that two or three gunmen were believed to be involved in the attacks. In addition to the soldier, Ottawa Hospital said that it received two patients, both of whom were in stable condition. Cabinet minister Tony Clement said on Twitter that he heard at least 30 shots inside Parliament, where MPs were holding their weekly caucus meetings. Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who was in the building at the time of the shooting, left unharmed.
