AlHijjah 3, 1435, Sep 27, 2014, SPA -- The leader of Spain's Catalonia region signed legislation Saturday that calls for a referendum on independence to be held November 9, defying opposition from the central government in Madrid, according to dpa. Catalan President Artur Mas signed a decree that will allow more than 7 million inhabitants of the wealthy north-eastern region to vote on whether it should become its own state and whether that state should be independent. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has called such a vote illegal, saying the matter would be referred to the country's Constitutional Court.
