The number of deaths from Ebola has risen to 1,350 in West Africa, dpa cited the World Health Organization (WHO), as saying on Wednesday. It said 2,473 suspected or confirmed cases had been reported in the region. Between August 17 and 18, 221 new suspected and confirmed Ebola cases as well as 106 deaths were reported from Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, according to the WHO. In Liberia's capital, Monrovia, riots broke out after the government quarantined the country's biggest slum in an effort to curb the Ebola epidemic, local newspaper Front Page Africa reported Wednesday. Residents clashed with armed security guards and police officers, who had cordoned off the West Point slum, home to an estimated 75,000 residents. Officers also blocked off the Waterside Market, one of the Liberian capital's key market places, due to its proximity to the slum. West Point residents had broken into the quarantine centre Saturday and freed the patients, who were suspected of being infected with the virus. -- SPA 20:57 LOCAL TIME 17:57 GMT تغريد
