More than 1,000 people returned to their homes on Wednesday as firefighters suppressed a wildfire near Yosemite National Park. "We're not seeing the fire expand like we thought," Madera County Sheriff John Anderson said, as 35 percent of the wildfire had been contained by firefighters. The wildfire started on Monday in the community of Oakhurst, near Yosemite, and residents were advised to evacuate their homes. The wildfire burned through 2.6 square kilometers, which destroyed eight structures. The wildfire comes as California goes into its third straight year of drought, creating dry conditions that increase the possibility of fires starting. The wildfire did not destroy any part of the park, which opened on Tuesday after closing on Monday.
