Dozens of people were killed and more than a million affected as floods driven by torrential monsoon rains ravaged India's northern and eastern states, officials and news reports said Monday, according to dpa. At least 28 people were killed in Uttar Pradesh state in landslides, house collapses or drownings over the weekend, state relief commissioner Kishan Singh Atoria said. Between 400,000 and 500,000 people in 1,000 villages were affected - displaced, stranded in their homes or suffered damage to their crops, land or livelihoods. "Besides heavy rains, the damage is mainly on account of the Rapti and Ghagra rivers that are in spate after Nepal released water from its barrages," he said. Nearly 100 people have perished in the Nepal floods so far and another 120 were missing.
