The Israeli army hit targets in the Gaza Strip in response to rocket attacks by Palestinian militants on Friday, after a three-day ceasefire ended and Egypt-mediated indirect talks failed to secure a longer truce, dpa reported. Militants in Hamas-run Gaza fired 57 rockets, injuring a civilian moderately and a soldier lightly, the Israeli army said. Three of the rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome anti-missile system over the city of Ashkelon. Israel carried out airstrikes on some 50 targets in the Gaza Strip, including on a mosque in the north of the enclave where medics said a 10-year-old child was killed. At least 11 others were injured. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had ordered the military to respond "with force" to the renewed rocket attacks, Israeli media reported. Saraya al-Quds, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad, claimed responsibility for firing rockets from Gaza into southern Israel after the ceasefire ended at 8 am (0500 GMT). Al-Qassam Brigades - Hamas' armed wing - says that its forces will continue fighting if Israel fails to accept its demands, which include lifting the blockade on the coastal enclave. -- SPA 21:54 LOCAL TIME 18:54 GMT تغريد
