At least 26 people were killed and 79 injured Sunday after a strong earthquake struck China's south-western province of Yunan, state broadcaster CCTV reported, according to dpa. The US Geological Survey said the 6.1-magnitude quake struck at 0830 GMT at a depth of 10 kilometres. The China Earthquake Networks Centre said it was a 6.5 magnitude quake. "I felt a strong jolt in my fifth-floor home and some small objects fell off the shelves," said a resident in Ludian, according to the official Xinhua news agency. The county of Ludian has a population of 265,900. Old buildings and homes developed cracks or crumbled, according to Xinhua. Power lines were cut and telecommunications services were affected.
