A strong earthquake on the Pacific Coast jolted a wide area of southern Mexico and Central America on Monday, killing at least two people in Guatemala. The magnitude-7.1 earthquake hit at 11:23 GMT just off the coast of the Mexican state of Chiapas, near the Guatemala border, at a depth of about 75 kilometers, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The epicenter was 225 kilometers west of Guatemala City. Emergency authorities said at least two people were killed in the Guatemalan town of San Marcos, where some buildings were damaged and landslides were reported. Authorities in Chiapas said there were no immediate reports of major damage. Mexican media said the earthquake was felt strongly in the states of Chiapas and Tabasco. The Earthquake also was felt in El Salvador.
