Health ministers or other officials from 11 African countries met Wednesday in the Ghanaian capital of Accra to tackle an Ebola virus epidemic which has been described as threatening regional and global health security. Nearly 760 Ebola cases had been confirmed in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone by the end of June, according to the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO), which organized the meeting. Nearly 470 people have died. Despite efforts to combat the disease, "there has been a significant increase in the number of daily reported cases and deaths of Ebola, as well as newly affected districts over the last three weeks," the WHO reported, describing the ongoing outbreak as the largest so far.
