Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed a peace plan presented by new Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and said he hopes it will reduce violence and ease tensions in the eastern part of the country, the United Nations said Sunday. The peace plan involves proposals for decentralizing power, holding early elections, and creating buffer zone on the Ukraine-Russia border. In a telephone call with Poroshenko on Saturday, Ban reiterated the U.N. commitment to help resolve the crisis in eastern Ukraine. He also discussed the humanitarian situation in the country and pledged to help with internally displaced persons.
