A goal late in the first half by Atsuto Uchida gave Japan a 1-0 victory over Cyprus on Tuesday in their last match at home before the World Cup in Brazil. The 43rd minute goal in Saitama had a German touch as it was scored by Schalke's Uchida after good work from Mainz's Shinji Okazaki and former Borussia Dortmund star Shinji Kagawa, now at Manchester United. Kagawa missed Japan's best chance for a second goal after the break but Alberto Zaccheroni's side held on regardless. The team heads to a training camp in Florida on Thursday which includes friendly matches against Costa Rica (June 2) and Zambia (June 6), dpa reported. Japan have been drawn in group C in the World Cup and face the Ivory Coast, Columbia and Greece in Brazil.
