The Malawi High Court on Saturday rejected a decision by President Joyce Banda to nullify this week's general elections and ordered the vote count to continue. The electoral commission and the Malawi Law Society turned to the court after Banda announced new elections would be conducted within 90 days because of widespread irregularities in Tuesday's poll, dpa reported. The president, who was trailing behind two other candidates, also said she would not contest the new elections. The court decision means Tuesday's elections will be valid unless Banda obtains a court injunction nullifying them. Banda said earlier Saturday she was using presidential powers "in the interest of the nation" to stop the vote count. -- SPA 19:59 LOCAL TIME 16:59 GMT تغريد
