At least 40 migrants were on Monday reported dead and about 200 were said to have been rescued from a ship that was carrying hundreds of people when it capsized in open sea waters between Libya and Italy. It was the second deadly shipwreck reported over the past 24 hours in the central Mediterranean, dpa reported. Earlier, the Italian navy, which coordinates boat patrols in the Mediterranean, spoke of over 200 survivors and 14 victims, noting that the death toll was "not yet final." It could not clarify how many people were shipwrecked and how many were still missing. According to Italian media, the vessel capsized about 50 nautical miles (93 kilometers) off the Libyan shore and some 100 nautical miles south of the island of Lampedusa, Italy's southernmost point. The accident came a day after another shipwreck off the coast of Libya claimed the lives of 40 migrants.
