South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar signed a peace agreement late Friday after holding direct talks in Addis Ababa, dpa reported. The agreement calls for an end to hostilities within 20 hours and the formation of a transitional government, and an estimated 1 million people displaced by fighting since December are to receive immediate humanitarian relief. Brokered by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and US Secretary of State John Kerry, the direct talks in Addis Ababa were the first since the armed conflict erupted in mid-December.
