Dozens of people were injured after an explosion hit a railway station in Urumqi, the capital of China's restive far western region of Xinjiang, state media reported Wednesday. According to dpa, police and ambulances rushed to Urumqi's south railway station following the blast, which took place at around 7 pm (1100 GMT) at the station's main exit. Around 50 people were injured in the explosion, which was "centred around some luggage left on the ground between the station exit and a public bus stop," the official Xinhua news agency quoted witnesses as saying. Police evacuated people from the square in front of the station and nearby areas, the agency said. Armed police had cordoned off the area and trains were suspended, it quoted a police officer as saying.
