Ebola Death Toll Rises to 72 in Guinea

latest
update
from the H
ealth
Ministry of the West A
frican
country.
The figure builds on the previous toll of 61
announced
on April 19 by the
authorities
in G
uinea
, which
has
become the epicenter of the E
bola
virus
outbreak
in West A
frica
, X
inhua
reported.

uinean
health ministry
official
leading the fight
against
the E
bola
virus
disease
,
said

riday
that there
are
115 confirmed
cases
of the
deadly
disease.
From April 17 to 24, G
uinean
disease
treatment
centers recorded six new
dead
cases, of which one
was
in
capital
C
onakry
and five in the southern Guekedou prefecture,
said

.

bola
virus
disease
has killed 147 people in West A
frica
, where more
than
240
cases
have been recorded in G
uinea

iberia
.
First discovered in 1976 in two
simultaneous
outbreaks in S
udan
and in the D
emocratic
Republic of
Congo
(DR
Congo
), the E
bola
virus
was
named
after
the E
bola
River where the DR
Congo
outbreak
was found in
a
nearby
village
.
There is still no cure for the
deadly
E
bola
virus
disease
which
has
an
incubation
period between two
and
21
days
and
carries
a
fatality
rate of up to 90 percent.
The WHO defines the E
bola
virus
disease
, formerly known
as
E
bola
haemorrhagic fever,
as
"
a
severe, often
fatal
illness"
and
"one of the world's most virulent
diseases
."
