The death toll in the sinking of a South Korean ferry had increased to 64 people early Monday, as hopes of finding any of the missing passengers alive faded, dpa cited national media reporting. Another 238 were still missing, with no one found alive since 174 people were rescued from the sinking ferry Sewol off the south-western island of Jindo on Wednesday, Yonhap News Agency reported. Rescuers worked through the night with the help of remotely operated vehicles that entered the ferry, Yonhap said. Authorities were to resume the search by mobilizing 212 boats, 32 naval ships, 34 aircraft, and 556 military and civilian rescue workers, including divers, it reported. There were 476 passengers and crew on the ship, including at least 320 students and 15 teachers from Danwon High School in Ansan, near Seoul, when it began to capsize during a routine trip from Incheon to the southern resort island of Jeju.
