International aid organizations Thursday intensified medical and logistical efforts in an attempt to stop the spread of Ebola, which has killed more than 110 people in West Africa, dpa reported. In Guinea, where the outbreak began, 101 people were killed by the deadly virus, while another 157 are suspected to be infected with Ebola. Neighbouring Liberia registered 11 deaths and 18 suspected cases. Sierra Leone and Mali reported two and four suspected cases, respectively. Another neighbour, Senegal, closed its border to Guinea to protect its population, while a number of foreign mining firms shut down operations in gold, diamond- and bauxite-rich Guinea and evacuated international staff. Almost 200 aid workers from various international organizations arrived in Guinea in recent weeks to help fight the outbreak. The World Health Organisation was training dozens of volunteers to assist health workers in checking up on residents who had come into contact with infected persons.
