Mao Asada of Japan clinched the women's figure skating title for the third time with victory at the World Figure Skating Championships before home fans in Saitama Saturday. Asada, 23, held off Russian team Olympic champion Yulia Lipnitskaya and Italian Carolina Kostner in the free skate to become the first Japanese three-time champion, according to dpa. Asada, who held a narrow 1.42-point lead from the short programme, finished with 216.69 points, 9.19 ahead of Lipnitskaya and 12.89 up on Kostner. The victory added to Asada's world singles titles from the world championships in Gothenburg in 2008 and Turin in 2010.
