Slovakia holds a presidential runoff on Saturday pitting Prime Minister Robert Fico against independent businessman Andrej Kiska, according to dpa. Fico was only narrowly victorious over 13 opponents in the first round of the presidential election earlier this month, winning 28 per cent, while Kiska took 24 per cent. As most of these candidates in the first round were from the opposition, Kiska could unseat Fico should there be strong opposition voter turnout in the second round. Outgoing conservative President Ivan Gasparovic, who has served for two terms, is barred by the constitution from running again. A Fico victory would serve to consolidate the power of his social democratic Smer party, which holds more than half the seats in parliament. Fico has accused millionaire Kiska of making his fortune through profiteering and exploiting weaker segments of society.
