Sardar Mohammad Nadir Naeem said Wednesday that he was pulling out of the April 5 presidential election in Afghanistan and would back former foreign minister Zalmai Rassoul. Rassoul welcomed the decision. Earlier this month, Qayum Karzai, the brother of Afghan President amid Karzai, pulled out of the race to support Rassoul. Former Afghan defense minister Abdul Rahim Wardak has also quit the race, which now has eight candidates. Rassoul, a former foreign minister and a key ally of Karzai, is one of the top three candidates. Karzai, is not eligible to run for a third term.
