The ruling coalition in the Maldives was heading for victory in parliamentary elections as vote counting continued Sunday, dpa cited officials as saying. Preliminary results showed incumbent President Abdulla Yameen's Progressive Party of the Maldives and its coalition partners winning more than 50 of the 85 legislative seats. The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party, led by former president Mohamed Nasheed, was trailing with around 20 seats, according to the provisional results. Final results were expected around midday, an election officer said. An estimated 240,000 voters were registered to vote on the islands, and about 60 per cent of those cast ballots, officials said.
