They gave no details of the late Wednesday conversation, which the Kremlin confirmed, saying it was initiated by the Germans. A Russian statement said they discussed "possible variants of international assistance to normalize the situation in Ukraine." Merkel's deputy chancellor, Sigmar Gabriel, is meeting Putin at an official residence near Moscow.
