Syria has either destroyed or shipped out about a third of its chemical weapons stockpile, including mustard gas, theOrganisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said Tuesday. Another consignment, which will bring the total number to six, is scheduled to be shipped out from the port city of Latakia for destruction abroad, the watchdog said at a meeting in The Hague. The latest consignment is to be neutralized on a US Marines vessel in the Mediterranean Sea. Syria has also put in place a fresh schedule for handing over the rest of its weapons stockpile, with a new deadline slated for April. Syria has missed several deadlines for shipping out its stockpile. Under a UN resolution, backed by Russia and the United States, Syria is to hand over all of its 1,300 tonnes of declared chemical weapons for destruction by mid-2014.
