Government-backed candidate Yoichi Masuzoe won Tokyo's election for governor, defeating two major anti-nuclear candidates, including former premier Morihiro Hosokawa, final results showed early Monday, according to dpa. Masuzoe - a former health minister backed by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) - garnered more than 2.1 million votes in Sunday's election in the Japanese capital with the population of 13 million. "I will move forward by using my experience as health minister," Masuzoe told a news conference after the victory. Kenji Utsunomiya, a human rights lawyer who also opposes nuclear power, came second with about 982,000 votes, followed by Hosokawa with 956,000, who served as premier in the early 1990s. Hosokawa and former premier Junichiro Koizumi, who served from 2001 to 2006, joined forces to push for an end to nuclear power after the triple meltdown three years ago of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.
