At least five people were killed when separatist militants attacked a bus in the north-eastern Indian state of Assam, police said Saturday, according to dpa. Armed rebels stopped the bus in the Kokrajahar district late Friday, forced eight people to get down and opened fire on them. Five people died at the scene, and three wounded people were taken to hospital later, police official AP Raut said. He said the attackers were from the National Democratic Front of Bodoland, which has been fighting for a separate homeland for the Bodo tribe in Assam since 1996. The north-eastern region has nearly 40 separatist, tribal or leftist groups active in five states. dpa 12:19 LOCAL TIME 09:19 GMT تغريد
