The U.S. State Department confirmed that Iran must commit itself to the 2012 Geneva communiqué in order to take part in the January peace conference on Syria. "Iran would need to publicly accept the Geneva I communiqué in order to be considered for participation at the ministerial level," State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters during the daily press briefing on Monday. The spokeswoman said Iran must indicate to the international community its commitment to ending the Syrian violence for the United States to support their attendance at the Geneva II Mideast Peace Conference, adding that there is no indication that Tehran is willing to take any of the necessary steps.
