The Italian Navy rescued 236 migrants on a small boat in distress in the Mediterranean, it said Sunday. According to dpa, the passengers from Syria, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, the Palestinian territories, Ghana and Ivory Coast were picked up Saturday about 80 nautical miles (150 kilometers) south of the Italian island of Lampedusa, the navy said. There was no safety equipment on board the overcrowded boat, it said. The passengers, who included 39 children, were transferred to a navy ship and were expected to arrive Monday in Augusta, Sicily.
