Large parts of the United States were experiencing massive disruptions Friday after a winter storm slammed into the North-East, dumping up to 60 centimeters of snow in places. About 100 million people - nearly one-third of the US population - and more than 20 of the 50 US states were in the path of the storm with the North-East the hardest hit, dpa reported. The governors of New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency Thursday, and residents were warned to stay inside as the storm continued. Many schools and businesses were remaining closed Friday. Hundreds of flights were cancelled across the country, and thousands of others were delayed with Chicago's O'Hare airport, Newark's Liberty International, New York's La Guardia and Hopkins in Cleveland among the worst affected, media reports said. Some major highways were also closed. The National Weather Service said one town just north of Boston had more than 50 centimeters of snow by Thursday night. Blizzard warnings were issued for Cape Cod and other coastal parts of Massachusetts as well as for parts of Maine and Long Island, New York. People in New York City were bracing themselves for an expected 20 centimeters of snow on Friday.
