Thirteen soldiers were killed in a suicide car bombing near Benghazi in eastern Libya, the state-run LANA news agency reported Sunday. According to dpa, three people were also wounded in the early Sunday attack that targeted a security checkpoint some 60 kilometres east of Benghazi, added the report. The interim government condemned the attack as a "cowardly terrorist act" and declared three days of national mourning. "This cowardly act came as an attempt to hamper strenuous efforts made by personnel of the national army ... to establish security and protect people's lives in Benghazi," said the government in a statement.
