US Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday likened an eastern Philippine city hit by last month's Typhoon Haiyan to a war zone, as the Philippine government appealed for aid to rebuild, dpa reported. The wreckage was "absolutely staggering," Kerry told reporters during a brief visit to Tacloban City, the capital of Leyte province, worst hit by the storm. "It looks like a war zone in every respect, and in many ways for a lot of people it is," Kerry said. He said the United States was increasing humanitarian assistance for the victims of Haiyan by 24.6 million dollars. The aid comes on top of 64 million dollars that Washington has already provided in relief for the disaster, which left more than 6,000 dead and about 4 million people displaced.
