The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia confirmed its commitment to work with the United Nations and its member states in a comprehensive, fair, transparent and efficient manner in order to move forward in the process of reforming the Security Council stressing the importance it attaches to this matter. In his speech at the meeting of the General Assembly of the United Nations dedicated to the negotiations among governments on the reform of the Security Council yesterday, the Kingdom's permanent representative to the United Nations Abdullah bin Yahya Almoalimi said that the Security Council is no longer able to cope with the challenges of today as proved by the case of semi-paralysis in the Security Council's move forward toward resolving the conflicts in Palestine and Syria and maintaining security and world peace. He noted that his speech does not reflect pessimism or despair, but another attempt by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to sound the alarm about the need for reform. He drew attention to the position of the Kingdom calling for deep and comprehensive reform of the Security Council, increasing the number of its members and restricting the use of veto if not give up, describing such standards as the only possible means to enable the Security Council to fulfill its obligations to maintain peace and security in the world today. He added that the Kingdom supports expanding the membership of the Security Council to include permanent seats for the Arab States, African countries and other groups. The kingdom's permanent representative to the United Nations said that the Kingdom repeats call for the permanent members of the Security Council to stop the use of its veto power in cases of crimes against humanity, war crimes, genocide or ethnic cleansing.
