The European Union is flying 37 tons of urgently needed medical supplies to the Central African Republic (CAR) in the coming days, the bloc's executive announced Thursday, in an effort to help the country restore law and order, dpa reported. "A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding before our eyes in CAR, "said EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva. "The entire population is affected - and the number of people displaced in Bangui alone has increased by 130,000 in the space of only a few days. We must get assistance to them now," she added. The airlift, departing Saturday, will involve the humanitarian organizations Medecins du Monde and Medecins Sans Frontieres, the European Commission said. The EU has already sent a humanitarian aid plane to Cameroon to establish a daily air bridge with CAR.
