The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution Thursday authorizing military action in the Central African Republic hours after French forces had been deployed to secure strategic sites in response to deadly attacks, dpa reported. The UN resolution approves increased military involvement by troops from France and the African Union to protect civilians and restore peace in the war-torn country. It will also impose diplomatic sanctions against the country, which former colonial power France has warned is "on the verge of genocide." Gerard Araud, French ambassador to the UN and current president of the Security Council, said that the mandate authorizes French and African troops to use military force in order to protect civilians. The resolution, which also establishes an arms embargo on the country, is meant to pave the way to the deployment of UN peacekeeping forces once the situation is stabilized. -- SPA 20:23 LOCAL TIME 17:23 GMT تغريد
