Improved patrols in the Mediterranean; more spending on the fight against human trafficking; and a commitment to take in additional asylum seekers should all be considered by the European Union, the bloc's executive proposed Wednesday as it attempts to draw lessons from a slew of recent migrant deaths, dpa reported. The recommendations were prepared by an EU task force set up after an October 3 shipwreck off the Italian island of Lampedusa, the worst in recent European history. More than 360 people died. "The tragedy in Lampedusa triggered a very wide and emotional reaction across Europe - a chorus of voices calling for actions to avoid such disasters in the future," EU Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom noted in a statement.
