U.S. Vice President Joe Biden arrived in Beijing Wednesday to discuss a number of regional and world issues, most notably, China's recent decision to establish an air defense zone in the East China Sea, UPI reported. Prior to leaving for Beijing on the second leg of his Asia visit, Biden told a news conference in Tokyo, his first stop, that the United States is "deeply concerned by the attempt to unilaterally change the status quo in the East China Sea." Biden, who appeared with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, said the United States is monitoring the situation with its allies in Japan and South Korea and said he assured Abe that "we will remain steadfast in our alliance commitments."
