The United Nations on Tuesday appealed for 297 million dollars in financial aid for the Philippines after one of the world's strongest typhoons hit the country, according to dpa. The amount is on top of 25 million dollars that the UN has released from its central emergency relief fund, said Valerie Amos, the body's undersecretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator. "This is such a major tragedy for the Philippines," she said. "We have already seen so many crises but this one is the most deadly and destructive."
