AlHijjah 14, 1434, Oct 19, 2013, SPA -- The death toll from a ship disaster last weekend in Mali has risen to 72, with 11 people injured, Security Minister Sada Samake said. According to dpa, the overcrowded boat capsized while traveling north on the Niger River from the town of Mopti to Timbuktu on October 11. Some 200 people survived the accident. At a press conference late on Friday, Samake said the government would introduce new safety procedures to prevent further accidents. The minister admitted passenger boats largely were unregulated. The previous death toll released by officials had stood at 39. Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
