AlQa'dah 8, 1434, Sep 14, 2013, SPA -- Politicians and the public in India have welcomed the death sentences handed to four men for the gang rape and murder of a 23-year old student in New Delhi in December, dpa reported. The mainstream media and social networking sites were abuzz Saturday with comments on the outcome of the case in a south Delhi court Friday. "Showed no Mercy, Got no Mercy," the headline in the Hindustan Times, printed in red over black and white photographs of the men, read. "Death for four for dastardly, diabolical, brutal crime," The Times of India wrote. The unnamed student was repeatedly raped and beaten in a moving bus in the Indian capital on December 16. She died of her injuries 13 days later. The case sparked nationwide protests and prompted authorities to introduce stricter punishment in sexual violence cases. Five men and a juvenile were charged. One of the men was found hanged in his prison cell earlier this year. The juvenile was tried separately and sentenced to three years in a correctional facility. Federal Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, commenting on the court ruling late Friday said, "It passes on the message that if you commit this crime, this is the punishment you will get." Kiran Bedi, India's first woman police officer, now an activist tweeted, "Relieved to see beast sent to hell! If this happens in each case, message will be one! U commit such crime u go to hell!..The verdict increased faith in the criminal justice system".
