AlQa'dah 5, 1434, Sep 11, 2013, SPA -- The European Parliament voted Wednesday to limit the use of crop-based Biofuels in the transport sector, only to be met by a hail of criticism from environmental groups for not doing enough and from the industry for going too far, dpa reported. Biofuels were once thought to offer a renewable energy source witless impact on climate change than fossil fuels. But their green credentials have been tarnished because virgin vegetation - such as forests - has been cleared to plant Biofuels crops. "European consumption of biodiesel made from palm oil is linked to rapid deforestation in countries such as Indonesia, which is causing climate-changing carbon emissions, forest fires and smog across the region," the Friends of the Earth group noted. Biofuels have also been criticized for spurring land grabs in the developing world and competing with food production, leading to shortages and higher prices. The European Union hopes to reverse the trend by limiting to what degree crop-based Biofuels can be used in its transport sector by2020. -- SPA 22:43 LOCAL TIME 19:43 GMT تغريد
