The European Union has called for an investigation into reports that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons in an attack on opposition fighter strongholds in Damascus. "Such accusations should be immediately and thoroughly investigated," said a spokesperson for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton. "Any use of chemical weapons, by any side in Syria, would be totally unacceptable," the spokesperson said, calling for a United Nations expert mission to have "full and unhindered access" to investigate their potential use.
