A small eruption occurred at White Island off the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand on Tuesday morning, the volcano and earthquake monitoring service GeoNet said, according to DPA. Duty Volcanologist Nico Fournier said the eruption occurred at 10:23 am (2223 GMT Monday) and appeared to have continued for about 10 minutes, producing mainly steam. GeoNet has raised the aviation colour code on the volcano from green to red, the highest on a four-point scale. It also increased the volcanic alert level to two on a scale from zero to five. Level two indicates minor eruptive activity.
