More than 600 migrants were being taken to Sicily Tuesday as a national debate raged over near-daily immigrant landings and Italy's tough immigration laws. The Italian Coast Guard overnight rescued 336 Eritreans off the coast of Agrigento. About 200 of them escaped after being taken to Sicily, DPA reported. Authorities also intercepted 233 people of unknown nationality south of Lampedusa, a tiny island between Sicily and Tunisia, and found 67 people, believed to be from Syria and Pakistan, near a beach off Syracuse.
